Why should public service workers get better pension prospects than private sector workers?

Some get better pension prospects than the private sector, some get worse. When someone gets a job, they accept the package offered – pay, conditions, pension etc. If they don’t like them they are free not to take that job. It isn’t about private v public – that’s a false conflict the coalition government has engineered. If the public sector blames the private sector, and vice versa, they aren’t blaming the government. The problem isn’t about what pension is offered to new entrants to the public sector by the government, it’s about them reneging on agreements and commitments made to people who have paid in for 30+ years (all public sector pensions are employee contributory except armed forces). People have paid into pension schemes believing they knew what they would get – now they find they must pay more and work longer to receive less. Anyone would object to that.
