WHY SHOULD THE HOME GARDENER MAKE COMPOST?

Various studies have indicated that municipal waste is composed of almost 18% yard wastes, 8% food waste and 41% paper and paperboard - all of which can be processed through a composting system. Tree leaves make up a considerable portion of garden waste each year, along with the shrub and tree trimmings, and grass clippings that each lawn mowing generates. All forms of organic matter are good candidates for a composting operation on your property. Essentially, about two-thirds of what we put into a landfill can be composted at home and then incorporated into your garden and landscape soil. Composting is a very practical and convenient way to handle your garden wastes. Disposing of leaves, grass clippings and other garden wastes can be turned into useful compost with no more effort than it takes to bag and haul them away.
