Why the spelling “Compleat” instead of “Complete?

I decided to use “Compleat” as originally I thought it an English term or spelling. There have been a few books out using it, The Compleat Enchanter for one. I just thought it was unique and a little different. Then I received a letter from Piers Anthony, dated DisMember 14, 1999. He was checking out The Compleat Piers Anthony site and had this to say: “I just checked out the Compleat site, typing it from the listing on the card; it’s on our [HiPiers] links list, but I don’t think I have actually visited it before, at least not with its present offerings. It does look good, and I’ll be happy to recommend it to others who want more information on me. I gather you are not aware of the origin of the “Compleat” spelling; it dates from some time back in England, when Isaac Walton published The Compleat Angler in 1653, supposedly containing everything anyone needed to know about fishing.
