Why use Ice Melt Products?
Ice melt products are designed to weaken the grip between the moisture frozen in the porous concrete or ground surface that the ice breaks the bond with the surface and can then be managed or shovelled away. The melting reaction of the ice melt will continue until they reach ground temperature. The colder the temperature, the less effective salt is at melting ice. That’s why there are so many ice melting products on the market today, each with different amounts of added chemicals to cater to the temperature in question. A fine thin layer of your favourite de-icing product can be spread before the snow falls to eliminate the original bond with the surface as mentioned previous. Rock salt alone will do nothing on the side walk, but once the snow falls, the pre-treatment will assist in a nice clean plow because the bond between the ice and the surface was never formed.
