Why was Durham Youth Housing and Support Services formed?
Durham Youth Housing and Support Services (DYHSS) was formed to fill a need for shelter for homeless and at-risk youth in the Durham Region. When fully realized, the scope of our efforts will reach out to homeless youth in: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby. And yes, there are a number of quality services available for youth in the Durham Region but, no temporary or permanent shelter or housing specifically for at-risk and already homeless youth. Our goal is to provide a new and needed service and not to duplicate any of the services already available to youth. The youth we want to help are primarily age 16 to 24 years of age who through a variety of circumstances are now at-risk and homeless.
