Why was julius caesar murdered by his own countryman?

There probably were as many reasons for killing him as there were knives in his back. Shakespeare speculates that some acted from envy, others from a sense of patriotism and mistrust of power. But, you also have to remember that there was a lot going on politically at the time. Caesar, and Marcus Antonius after him, believed that the way to make Rome greater was to seek an alliance with Egypt and, in effect, fuse the two political systems together. This could have resulted in a Caesar/Cleopatra dynasty — they did have a child together — perhaps checked in some way by the Roman senate. Others in Rome thought this was a sell-out, that Rome did not need to be allied with Egypt but rather master of it. These eventually were represented by Octavian, who of course won. There is also the symbolism of where he was murdered — at the foot of Pompey’s statue. Perhaps some of the assassins simply were resentful at Caesar for having bested their old boss.
