Why Was Plain Dealer Critic Cut From Symphony Beat? Friday September 26, 2008#spacer{clear:left}#abc #sidebar{margin-top:1.5em}zSB(3,3) The Cleveland Plain Dealer has booted music critic Donald Rosenberg from his longtime beat covering the city’s world-renowned orchestra, and many think it’s because he did his job too well. Rosenberg had long been critical of the orchestra’s conductor, Franz Welser-Mst, saying he brought little in the way of innovation or fresh ideas to his job. Some believe that over the years, Rosenberg simply rankled too many of the orchestra’s boosters, including Plain Dealer publisher Terrance C. Z. Egger, who also sits on the orchestras board. Egger isn’t commenting. Plain Dealer Editor Susan Goldberg, who’s been running the paper about a year, told The New York Times that Rosenberg’s reassignment – he’s now a general arts & entertainment reporter – was an internal personnel matter.
