Why was President Nixon really impeached?
Nixon was NOT impeached. “Impeached” means to bring an official to trial. He was told that he would be brought to trial and convicted if he did not resign, so he resigned BEFORE he would have been impeached. He was nervous about losing the election, so he bugged the other party’s headquarters. He tried to cover it up, which is mainly why people were so angry. They knew he was a part of it and he still tried to act like he wasn’t. The “smoking gun” tape was a main piece of evidence. Nixon thought he was going to be a revolutionary president, so he recorded everything he said. During that tape, Nixon conversed with H.R. Haldeman and they talked about covering up Watergate. Somehow, 18 minutes from that tape magically disappeared. Therefore, people were suspicious and it was pretty much publicly known that he was, in fact, involved with Watergate.
