Why was the Champs Elysées built?
The first section of the Champs Elysées was built at the order of Marie de Medici in 1616 as an extension of the gardens of the Tuileries Palace (which no longer exists). The idea was to create a pleasant path to walk or ride on and did not, in the beginning, actually go anywhere. Eventually the surrounding area was built up and the Champs became a fashionable place to stroll. The Champs-Elysées did not become city property until 1828, when footpaths and fountains were added. Gas lights were also added at this time.
