Why was the roman republic important to Julius Caesar?

Firstly, Romans didn’t like kings, that’s why Rome became a Republic in the first place. So, Caesar couldn’t risk declaring himself king/emperor, he might have lost public support. So, he had to keep the Republic, at least in name, to maintain his power. Secondly, he used the laws of the Republic to attain supreme power, as Dictator for life, to give the appearance of a legal ascension to power rather than one by force. So, again, he needed to retain the Republic, at least in name, to give validity and the appearance of legality to his ‘legal’ takeover of power. He could represent himself as the legal ruler of the Republic.
