Why was the Vietnam War conflict a difficult war to fight for American and South Vietnam soldiers?

We could not invade North Vietnam without risking intervention by Red China or the Soviet Union (as happened in the Korean War 1950-1953). We couldn’t use atomic weapons with out risking the same results. We could not isolate the flow of enemy men & material into South Vietnam, as we had successfully done in the Korean War (because Korea was on a Peninsula.
