Why were Britsh Leyland (Austin/Morris/Rover etc) cars such rubbish?
British Leyland was an industrial disaster for the UK. All the fine car marques were swallowed by it and the unions had considerable power over the workforce. The company was an out of control monster that brought out the worst of the workers and the bosses. Everyone lost pride in the company, probably because its sheer size meant people couldn’t identify with it. The result was endless strikes and poor workmanship. It gave the Tories all the excuse they needed to try to destroy the unions (along with the coal workers) and, in doing so, the resultant fight caused the wholesale destruction of the UK motor industry (formerly a world leader) and the loss of countless thousands of jobs and affiliated industries. It really was a disaster. Personally, I blame all sides.
