Immigrants, both legal and illegal, do improve their homelands by exporting money to their homelands. These are referred to as transfer payments. Some countries only financially survive at all because of transfer payments – the Philippines is one of those places… and not all the transfer payments come from the US. The problem with many of these countries is that they have been stripped of capital by colonialists in the past, and little was reinvested in the country from which resources were extracted. This is still going on, but under corporate leadership, rather than direct national colonialism. Many of the countries where people regularly live in hunger are net exporters of luxury foods to the first world, when if that land were available for use by the indigenous people for foodstuffs, they would have a surplus… instead they grow our coffee tea and cocoa, and out exotic fruits… and our drugs.
