Why won the Government provide antivirals for prophylaxis (prevention) during a pandemic?
Answer The UK stockpile is intended for treatment only but could also be used for post-exposure prophylaxis in the very early stages of a pandemic in the UK. Sustained use of antivirals for prophylaxis will not represent the best use of our resources, and would reduce the number of people who could be treated. However, we are keeping all possible strategies under review taking into account new information and developments as they emerge.
