Why would a person choose an affair over their family?
You ask why a man would cheat on his wife despite what he stands to lose at home. Here are some clues as to what goes on in the mind of the typical male cheater: 1) I won’t get caught, this isn’t an important relationship 2) I’ll cut this off tomorrow 3) My wife loves me/needs me too much to leave 4) I’ll lie my way out of it — deny, deny, deny 5) She can’t leave me, she has no way to support herself without me 6) She won’t leave, I’ll make sure she knows I’ll take the house and everything. 7) I won’t get caught, this feels good why stop? And so on. In other words, these men are usually rationalizing and living in fantasy-land most of the time. Many of them are controllers who love the excitement of having two women fighting over them or pleading with them for more time, commitment, etc. Most men don’t cheat with the intention of leaving their wives or families and rationalize it with excuses such as: 1) She’s such a nag lately 2) I’m not getting enough sex, hey I’m a man I need it! 3
