The list of best sellers is exactly that: a list of the books people are buying and reading. And people are obviously buying and reading lots of fiction and lots of non-fiction as well. Pouting pundits like Chris Matthews and others notwithstanding, the truth is that the majority of Americans are moderate or conservative. That majority comprises 75% of the population of these United States. Would the NY Times want to offend the majority of their readers, not to mention the majority of the population? To do so would be intellectually insulting, and could be fiscally damaging to circulation numbers and thus that all-important ad income. Further, the Americans who designate themselves as moderate or conservative comprise Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. 97% of Republicans designate themselves as moderate or conservative; 62% of Democrats designate themselves as moderate or conservative……..and those very important Independents designate themselves as 79% moderate or conservati
