It was with great hesitation and only after trying EVERY other natural sweetener known that we settled for sugar. You are right, it is an oxymoron to have so much goodness in a product and then to add sugar. So you might ask can other companies use Agave or Stevia or other such sweeteners and we don’t. The answer is simple. Look at the amount of (over 40) and the QUANTITY of each of the other ingredients and understand that to overwhelm their absolutely dreadful flavors/smells required a lot of flavoring (cocoa and natural fruit sweeteners) and a lot of sugars too. Agave would be a good choice as would be Stevia but Agave didn’t cut it and Stevia gets very bitter once a certain amount is passed. Believe me we worked for months and the only other sweetener that did as good a job at masking the underlying awfulness was Splenda (sucralose) and we were absolutely not going to use that. There is Aloe in the product that help to counter the sugar and chromium to help counter the sugar spikes
