Why wouldn a car battery work for a small trolling motor 12volt?
Answer Hi Phred, Yes a car starting battery will work to some extent but will not last very long. Starting batteries are designed to send a quick powerful charge to the starter. A deep cycle battery is designed to handle a long slow draw of power which is needed for trolling motors. So, the answer is that yes you could run a trolling motor off a car battery but you would get a few hours out of it. A fully charged deep cycle may get you several days (or more)of use. Deep cycles are made to be drained way down before charges. You will actually do some damage to a starting battery by continually draining it low. Good fishing!
