Will a semiconductor diode make current flow in a wire?

No it will however allow current to flow in one direction and prevent current flow in the other direction if an ac Voltage is applied across it`s terminals. If a DC Voltage of sufficient magnitude and correct polarity is applied across it`s terminals it will also allow current to flow in the forward direction.. A diode has no EMF (Voltage) of it`s own to make current flow.
