Will an abused dog ever recover and not cower?
Abused dogs need constant reassurance that they won’t be mistreated again. It’ll take some time for him to learn that you won’t hurt him. This can definitely improve over time with love and affection. A professional trainer will only tell you the same thing. It’ll take time, lots of love, lots of praise, and patience for him to come around and understand that what happened to him in the past will never happen again. When you reach to pet him, don’t hover over him. It can be a bit threatening. Don’t move too quickly. Patience is key with abused dogs. Thank you for adopting him and working with his shyness instead of giving up. He really needs someone who will never abuse him again and love him for the rest of his life.
