Will biomedical or environmental engineering have better job security in the future?
That is a very good question. I not exactly unbiased but I think biomedical will have better security because it is less affected by political trends. While environmental engineering is a good area right now, it is good largely because the political wind is driving it. The industry has not really developed its own demand. If political trends change in the future, it could easily slow down. In health care, there are powerful market forces driving the business. With the aging of our population (and other around the world), there are great opportunities designing, making and delivering medical device technology. For example, pacemakers, catheters, stents, imaging equipment (x-ray, mri, ultrasound, etc.), artificial hearts, dialysis machines, diagnostic equipment, artificial joints, and vascular grafts are some of the devices that biomedical engineers help produce. Biomedical Engineering is probably one of the most recession proof areas of the economy.
