Man overboard devices or MSLDs are intended strictly as short-range homing devices and were never intended or designed as an emergency beacon to alert the satellite system. Although the 121.5 MHz frequency will no longer be processed by Cospas-Sarsat satellites as of February 1 2009, the frequency can still be used as a homing frequency. Thus, 121.5 MHz homing devices will continue to function as intended - for short range homing only.  more
