WILL MERCURY CAUSE CORROSION?
Here is what I am sure of, concerning mercury. 1.) It is a neurotoxin, meaning it harms tissues of the nervous system. 2.) It will coat your gold jewelry. I used to work in a dental office where we used mercury to make amalgams, those silver colored fillings. If you got the mercury on your jewelry, it gave it an ugly gray coating that had to be polished off by a jeweler. 3.) It is a good conductor of electricity. It was once used in switches and thermostats. Here is my best guess concerning corrosion: I don’t think it “rusts” because if it did it would be unsuitable for dental applications. If it is a good conductor of electricity, that might cause a bimetallic reaction and hasten corrosion. Sorry so vague!
The interaction of mercury with materials of construction has not been intensively investigated until recently. Mercury corrosion in the present context means corrosion of metals caused by liquid mercury in contact with metals, corrosion of metals caused by mercury as a dissolved species in the corrosive environment, corrosion of metals whose surfaces are contaminated by mercury and corrosion of metallic mercury. please see the corroded tank by mercury in the website given below in source.
