Will the brave American sailors of the crew of the USS Liberty ever be rehabilitated by the US ?
The issue is far too politically sensitive and was officially closed by Jimmy Carter decades ago, and their families did receive compensation for the incident from the Israeli government according to some accounts. Yes, I’m aware that there’s still considerable controversy over this and that many people are not satisfied, but I think it’s extremely unlikely that anything further will come from it. Our government has no interest in dragging this out and embarrassing our only real friend in the Middle East, and that’s unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. It is an unfortunate reality of war that sometimes mistakes are made and sometimes bad decisions are made. This is one such example and I believe everyone involved is ashamed of what occurred.
