If anyone needs protection from angry fans this week, it’s probably Gordon. In fact, the Earnhardt faithful who pack Talladega Superspeedway twice a year almost seemed disappointed they had to settle for Vickers as the target of their beer-can-hurling wrath. Gordon provided plenty of fuel for the frothing masses when he accused Earnhardt of bump-drafting (the art of slamming a competitor to gain speed) that was too violent. Earnhardt retorted that Gordon never reciprocates drafting help and that he was done providing aid. Since there’ll be no more bump-drafting until the 2007 Daytona 500, the quarrel seems likely to defuse itself. Though Earnhardt and Gordon will square off in an interview during the Wind Tunnel program at 9 p.m. ET Sunday on Speed Channel, don’t expect anything to escalate but sales figures of merchandise associated with the popular drivers.
