Evaluation is an ongoing process. In addition to reviewing a student’s progress on the IEP annually, the law requires that the student be re-evaluated every three years. The re-evaluation may be conducted more frequently if the parent or teacher requests it, or if conditions warrant a re-evaluation. The team will meet to decide the nature of the re-evaluation process. For example, the team may conduct a review of information provided by parents, current classroom-based assessments and observations, and teacher and related services providers’ observations. This review may be conducted without a meeting. If the review is conducted without a meeting, there must be documentation that you were contacted for your input. If, on the basis of the review and input from the student’s parents, a formal evaluation is needed, the school must once again have your written consent before the evaluation can be done.
