The Yamaha WX7, WX11, and WX5 are the “professional” Yamaha-level wind controller instruments. Yamaha also made the EW-20 WindJamm’r system which was aimed more toward beginners. The WX Series are based on the saxophone, although they look somewhat sleeker and more high tech. The basic sensor inputs on the WX instruments are a breath pressure sensor, pitchbend (bite) sensor, and the keys. The WX5 and WX7 also have an additional pitchbend sensor controllable by the right hand thumb. The WindJamm’r also has this right hand thumb sensor but no bite sensor. When you blow into the instrument at a certain pressure threshold a Note On is sent. The MIDI velocity of the Note On is based on how hard you attack the note. The instrument plays legato so if you key a different note while maintaining breath pressure, the controller sends a Note On for the new note before sending the Note Off of the previous note.
