With so many advantages to using a performance air filter, why do automakers still use disposable air filters?
Automakers have a combination of reasons for using disposable paper filters, including habit, business relationships and cost-effectiveness. Performance air filters employ more expensive materials, thus are more expensive than a disposable paper filter. These extra dollars in production are outside what cost-conscious and budget-trimming CEOs are willing to add to the bottom line. Some signs of enlightenment are showing, though, as many dealerships now sell performance air filters through their accessories shop at the pricey dealer markup.
