Wood Floor separating from wall in colder weather.

Why does my floor separate from the baseboard in the winter months?

Hi Gwedolyn,

A wood floor expands in warmer weather and contract in colder weather. This happens with a lot of flooring materials. In smaller rooms you might not notice a difference, but in larger rooms it can create a large gap near the baseboards. An easy fix would to be to add on what’s called a quarter round to your baseboards and paint to match. If you don’t like to the look, you can replace your baseboards with something thicker to try and cover the gaps.
