Would a Mega Church sell their “gospel” in exchange for a widows mite?
In my town, one of the old mega churches decided that they would build a new, huge facility closer to where the rich folks live. Then the pastor began strong-arming the congregation to sell their cars and take out second mortgages on their houses to give a love offering to the building fund. The result was that he got his building built but he lost a lot of the flock. Churches are a business. Notice that a church built in an out-of-the-way spot never thrives, but the one in the center of town or next door to the beautiful housing always does well. The Catholic Church advises their priests exactly how many parishioners are needed to support the church financially, and I would suppose a similar formula exists for all Christian churches. Mostly they aren’t hoping for the widow with her mite.
