Would a metric time system be possible?
The following is a proposal for an entire system of measurement of time, following the metric ideal of units divisible by ten to the maximum extent possible. In designing this system, the following points were considered: * units divisible by ten are highly desirable, however other factors play a significant role * where numbers divisble by ten are not possible, units whose doubles or quadruples are divisible by ten are sought * most people are so familiar with current time measurements that resistance to change will be high * therefore, close correlation with current time units should be used when possible * in today’s high technology world, many measurements are made to very precise standards; small fundamental units allow more precise measurements without resorting to sub-units * the earth’s diurnal and annual cycle have an enormous impact on our lives * therefore, the length of a terrestial day and a solar year should be accepted as given factors to be worked within.
