Would a wrong power adapter prevent scanning software from seeing the scanner?

I have a Umax Astra 6450 scanner and am using the power adapter for a Astra 1220u scanner. The scanning software does not “see” the scanner as plugged in and powered up (which it is).

What’s wrong with using an adapter that allows me to plug my three prong device into a 2 prong power outlet?
Why is the time wrong (or run slow/fast) when I use a foreign voltage adapter to power the timing device?
What software do i need to do duplex (2-sided) scanning on a simplex (1-sided) scanner?
