Would building up my strength help with gymnastic moves or would it just weaken me ?

First off, building up your strength won’t weaken you. Second off yes, you need to work on your upper body strength for those exercises. I trained at Hills Gymnastics for a few years (home to Dominique Daws and Courtney Kupets) and we did a LOT of strength to be able to do our floor passes. I’m assuming youre already in gymnastics so I’ll give you some exercises you can do both at open gym / when practicing and then at home in case you don’t have access. Bar work like pull ups will really help your arms. I’d say start with 5- 10 a day ( or every other / a few times a week it depends on your dedication level) and then go from there. Also using a bar leg lifts will help. Most people don’t realize this but aside from just arm and leg strength youre going to need a very strong core (abs). So doing leg lefts both using the bar and then on the floor will help. On the floor you need to do leg lifts, bicycle crunches, scissors, and regular crunches and sit ups.
