Would having high eye pressure cause glaucoma?
Hello! High intraocular pressure is considered a strong risk factor in glaucoma as well as positive family history in a first degree relative, race (blacks), suspicious optic nerve appearance and central corneal thickness less then 0,5mm. The value of 21 mmHg has been accepted as a good way to separate the normal eye pressure from a pressure which could cause glaucoma. Of course, it doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone with high intraocular pressure will have glaucoma. It only means they are at higher risk. Reducing the eye pressure with eye drops will decrease the chances of developing glaucoma in the future.
