What the other commenters have just said is totally inaccurate. I’m an American in New Zealand on a working holiday visa and as long as you’re not a criminal with health problems you’ll get a visa by the end of next week if you apply today or tomorrow. My best friend just applied online on Sunday and got the electronic visa today. From the day you enter the country you have 12 months to live and work here. You can apply for one in Australia at the end of the 12 months if you want to work and travel there for a year. As a matter of fact, you can apply for working-holiday visas in dozens of countries. People just don’t know about it.

This depends on how long you are planning to be in NZ. As Snow stated above the Working Holiday Visa is very easy to get but the other posters were referring to the much more difficult to obtain Work Visa. This is a completely different thing. The WHV is, as Snow mentioned, only good for one year and cannot be renewed. You must have some funds to support yourself and state the main purpose of your visit is to have a holiday supported by part-time work, not to seek a permanent job. If you are looking for a brief overseas experience this is the way to go. Just check out criteria on the INZ website. Getting a regular work visa though is very difficult if you aren’t already in the country and trained in a highly skilled field. Work visas are granted in fields where there are a shortage of New Zealanders to fill the roles.
