peripherial edema is the accumulation of fluid in the tissues usually in the extremities especially the legs- that leaves an indentation in the skin and blanches in the area you press on- if it is severe the legs become very heavy and can have weeping of the fluid from the skin in that area you did not say they were swollen just stiff and sore stiff sore legs could be arthritis results of certain medications or just plain overexertion of muscles due to lack of exercise or under use of those muscles you also did not say how long you have experienced this and what you were doing that caused this so check with your doctor it could be a condition called DVT causing this pain but that is usually 1 leg or lymphedema which could indicate cancer or a cellulitis caused by a skin infection – but that is usuallly1 leg heaviness in the legs could also indicate peripherial artery disease since it is both legs if it persists more than a day or 2 you really should have it checked
