Like most other topics, this too is debatable. First, the attitude of insurers towards healthcare has to undergo a major transition. It is not untrue to say that their priority segment is, and has always been, only life insurance. It is a pity that these companies are turning a blind eye to the wealth of opportunities that healthcare presents to them. With the coming in of the foreign players, one can only hope that all this would change. For insurance to work in a country like India, it is also important to keep the affordability factor in mind. Although not everyone might be able to have health insurance cover, at least a sizable amount should be able to benefit from it. For a population of one billion people, even one per cent with insurance cover would mean about 10,00,000, which is a huge number.
