Would the US interviene in a civil war were 600,000 lives were being lost?

The American Civil War is probably the most famous of misnamed wars. A civil war is one in which an attacker attempts to overthrow the government. This war should have been known as “The War of Secession”. As for who should have stepped in to stop it; who could have? It’s not like there were superpower countries out there with the ability or inclination to stop a fledgling nation from tearing itself apart from inside. There are a number of countries who could have come in and mopped up or invaded during the war to make their claim on the country.
