Yes, it may be that when times are tough the Govt. cuts back on health services. That’s the problem when you nationalise a health service. However, even that is better than the current situation in the States where, unless you are independently wealthy, you can never afford health care; regardless of the economic climate. Furthermore, even if you are employed and have health insurance as part of your employment package, you have an insurer who dictates medical care to the doctor, who you may well not be able to choose anyway because he doesn’t work with that HMO. What you need is to have a national health care levy to which everyone contributes, calculated as a per centage of their earnings. Then you means (income) test entry so that, for example, anyone earning more than say $80,000 per annum in not entitled to free health care.
