KUSD has extensively evaluated the middle school philosophy over the past ten years, having conducted three separate studies to monitor the transition in 1998 from a junior high school configuration of grades 7, 8, and 9 to our current 6, 7, 8 middle school configuration. Data comparing student attendance and achievement in 1997-98 (final year of junior high) and 2001-2002 demonstrates significant improvement. For example, attendance rose by approximately 2%, and truancy decreased by nearly 11%. National scores for all grades (6,7,8) increased in both math and reading. On the WKCE test, our 8th grade math scores increased from 56% to 74% Research also indicates that sixth and ninth grades are important transition years for students, as they prepare to move academically, emotionally, and socially to the next level of schooling.
