Many poor people make a living collecting and selling firewood. A switch to fossil fuels will remove this vital source of income. Whatever policies governments instigate to increase the use of cleaner fuels there will need to build into them transitional support for the people who make a living out of providing firewood and charcoal. The United Nations Development Programme’s LPG challenge aims at overcoming these sort of problems and aims to improve access to the fuel where it is available in urban areas.
