The human immunodeficiency virus may also be called “HIV”. A virus is a germ that may cause illness. Once you are infected with the HIV virus, you will probably be infected for life. “AIDS” stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome . HIV is a virus that you may keep from getting by following certain guidelines. These include using a latex condom every time you have sex, and not using injectable (needle) street drugs. To get AIDS, you must be infected with HIV and have a weakened immune system.
