A coordinating conjunction is used to combine complete sentences (Options 1, 2, and 3). A subordinating conjunction subordinates a clause, making it dependent. For example, if you take the (independent) clause “I went shopping” and put a subordinating conjunction in front of it, you will have a dependent clause. “After I went shopping” is dependent upon something else for meaning. Subordinating conjunctions are used in Options 4 and 5.
