  1.  American Beauty is a film that stars Kevin Spacey, Annette Benning, and Thora Birch. It is also
written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes. Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a middle aged man
going through a very visual midlife crisis, one that involves eschewing his materialisic existence
and his corporate 9 to 5 job. Along with smoking pot and fantasizing about his daughter’s underage
high school friend. All of this is troubling his already rocky marriage to his wife Jane.

The film took home several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Kevin Spacey,
Best Director for Sam Mendes, and Best Original Screenplay for Alan Ball. Along with an award for
Best Cinematography for Conrad Hall, who also took home an award from the American Society of
Cinematographers. The film also swept the BAFTA Awards in England where Kevin Spacey won for Best
Actor, Conrad Hall for Best Cinematographer, Annette Benning for Best Actress, along with awards for
    Best Editing and Best Film.

It has only been twelve years after this film was released, so it would not make much since for
there to be a remake so quickly. Although Alan Ball has gone on subsequent success by creating two
critically acclaimed and highly rated HBO series, Six Feet Under and True Blood. Sam Mendes has
since directed films such as Road To Perdition, starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, and
Revolutionary Road starring his wife Kate Winslet and her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. American Beaty was a defining moment in many careers, and has enabled its cast and crew to prosper even further.
