  1. The word dermatology is self explanatory – “Derma” – the Greek word for skin and “logy” at the end of the word meaning study. In general, it is that branch of medicine that encompasses the study and diagnoses of anything related to skin – its structure, ailments associated with it and treatment of all skin diseases. Disorder of the hair and nails, blistering disorders, genital skin disease, surgical, medical, cosmetic and pediatric dermatology, photo dermatology, patch testing and connective tissue diseases also fall under this category.

     

    Work of a dermatologist

     

    So anyone pursuing a career in dermatology is known as a dermatologist. Many assume that since the mortality rate with skin diseases is less, a career as a dermatologist is not alluring. But, the skin, being the largest organ of the human body, is prone to many diseases and so pursuing a career as a clinical and surgical dermatologist could be intriguing. With the advent of cosmetic surgery and with liposuction, face lifts, the use of botulinum toxin, fillers, and laser surgery, dermatologists now reign supreme in their field. This career also gives the option of balancing time between one’s professional and personal lives.

     

    Courses to complete

     

    Students must complete their undergraduate MBBS course before they can opt for Dermatology as the specialization course for further studies.     Pay package and career

     

    A dermatologist can start his / her career with a pay package of more than Rs. 50,000.00 per month in a central government hospital while a professor / HOD / Director can earn more than thrice this amount. In private sectors, depending upon the performance, the starting salary of a dermatologist can be more than Rs. 30000.00 per month. Career options also include opening a private clinic.
