  1. Chromium is a trace mineral found in the tissues of animals and plants. Whole grains, meats, oysters, peas and potatoes are just a few of the sources of chromium. It is only needed in trace amounts so people rarely suffer from a chromium deficiency. More than enough chromium can be obtained through the diet. Normally when levels do reach certain lows, it is because of an illness or disease. Supplementation can help to remedy the situation until the problem is discovered and treated.

    Benefits

Chromium works with insulin to metabolize carbohydrates and turn them into glucose. This unique ability also helps to reduce food cravings. When adequate amounts of glucose are in the blood signals are sent to the brain that the body no longer needs food. As glucose levels decrease, the signals are sent that tell the brain that it’s time to eat. As this process continues, the body becomes more efficient at using the glucose it has available at any given time.

Chromium also has the ability to lower cholesterol. It is a key component in many diet supplement because it may reduce the amount of body fat a person carries. As the amount of body fat decreases, chromium helps to increase the amount of lean muscle throughout the body. This goes back to the efficiency of the body’s ability to use glucose. More efficient use of the body’s resources means a healthier, more resilient body.

    Side Effects

Chromium has few reported side effects. Any abnormal reaction such as swelling of the lips, nose, throat and tongue could be signs of an allergic reaction and should be reported to a physician immediately.

    Contraindications

Certain medications can be affected by taking chromium supplements. Oral diabetic medications, beta blockers, NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), proton pump inhibitors and steroids can all have different reactions when taken with chromium. Always consult a physician before taking chromium in any form.
