The military Montgomery GiBill is a cost effective method to attend both public and private universities for US Service Members. The post 9/11 GiBill would be best as it yields a larger amount of money for the service member given their honorable service for the nation. If you find that you are at least 10 % VA disabled, you may apply for chapter 31 Voc Rehabilitation after depletion of your GiBill Benefits. This rule is in place to ensure that service members use all Montgomery bill benefits first then extinguish any approved chapter 31 rehabilitation benefits.

To qualify for the higher financial return of the chapter 31 benefits you will need to meet several requirements. You will need to receive, or will receive, a discharge that is other than dishonorable, and administrative separation. Further, you will requirea service-connected disability rating of at least 10%, or a memorandum rating of 20% or more from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), an anticipated rating is not sufficient to get qualified. You will need to apply for Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess services provided by a VA location nearest you, for the fastest results, I would recommend contacting a disabled American veteran’s office near you for the correct forms.

Once qualified, you may attend a school of your choice to include both public and private universities. If you plan to work either part or full time, you should be aware that the VA will pay a subsistence allowance based on the financial figures below:

Number of Dependents Full Time Three Quarter Time One Half Time
    No Dependents $554.22 $416.43 $278.64
    One Dependent $687.47 $516.35 $345.23
    Two Dependents $810.13 $605.69 $405.81
    Each Additional
    $59.05 $45.41 $30.30

Note that Subsistence Allowance is paid for full time training only. Calculating all your GiBill Benefits + approval of Voc. rehabilitation = $100,000 Total payout to you and the prospective university. Being rated at 10% Veteran disability compensation + subsistence allowance to last no less than a three year term: $800 + per month = $4800tax free allowance per year not counting the amount the VA will pay out to cover your education expenses minus the costs of your texts. The financial benefits are at their maximum levels now than ever before!
