  1. This is a little something I came up with after watching the Mel Gibson movie of the same name. While caught up in a severe bout of jingoism, marching around my apartment shouting, “Yes!  Take that, you British scum,” I felt inspired to create an alcoholic concoction that might inspire patriotism in those who drink it—or at least get them good and loopy so they could enjoy 4th of July fireworks all the more.

To make this drink, you will have to get a hold of a special glass, one that is narrow and rather tall, not tapered but beaker-like (for those of you who just happen to work in a laboratory, this shouldn’t be too difficult). Dividing the various colors takes patience, skill and a steady hand, so don’t attempt this after the party is already in full swing, and you’ll probably have to practice it a few times before you get it right. Also, it’s important to get the drink to its recipient quickly, before the colors blend, but with great care, as jostling it will speed up the blending process. If you do this correctly, you will have, from bottom to top, a red, white and blue drink, hence the name.

    Here’s what you do:

    • Fill a tall, thin glass to the top with cube ice (small cubes if possible)
    • Pour ½-ounce of grenadine down the inner side of the glass, not over the ice
    • Add ½-ounce crème de almond in the same fashion and twirl the glass a bit, mixing it with the grenadine at the bottom of the glass
    • Very carefully add 1 ounce of vodka, pouring it first over the bottom of a spoon held over the ice at a slow trickle
    • Fill the glass ¾ of the way with half soda water and half sour mix, very carefully, over the inverted spoon as with the vodka
    • Carefully float ½-ounce blue Curacao over the same inverted spoon, just as carefully
    • Garnish with a lemon wedge
    • Serve with care
