Unique Shopping in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia

The northern panhandle of West Virginia is an area rich in industrial history, and it has played an often pivotal role in United States history.  Fortunately for the contemporary traveler, it is also home to some of the most unique shopping to be found, with wares ranging from classic dishware to fine locally-grown food products.  If you’re not afraid to take a jaunt down the Ohio River, you’re sure to find a local shop that will have something you will just have to buy.

    If you’re looking for the best in classic dinnerware, then be sure to stop by the Homer Laughlin China Company, located in Newell, West Virginia.  Here you’ll find the classic Fiestaware, the very popular and very colorful dinnerware that has been in production for several decades.  While you’re there, be sure to visit the Seconds Room, where you’re sure to find some of your favorite colors and dishes in prices that are hard to beat.

    As you move down the river, be sure to stop by the famous and historic Wheeling Center Market, which is home to a number of local merchants that sell fine products.  Wood ‘n’ Stitches, for example, sells a number of local crafts, including the lovely Keepsake Bears, which are made from quilts or clothing, as well as a number of items such as wooden stands, shelves, and much more.  For those with a more culinary mind, be sure to visit Valley Cheese, which has some very delicious cheese available for very reasonable prices.

    Also located in Wheeling is the Wheeling Artisan Center, which is housed above the River City Ale Works restaurant.  Here you will find a number of notable items, including locally made food products, books that detail the history and culture of the region, and a great deal of other items that are sure to give you a little something from West Virginia to take home.

    As your final stop in your shopping trip in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, be sure to visit the quaint town of Moundsville, located in Marshall County.  Although a smaller town by most standards, Moundsville has managed to keep its downtown area alive, and there are a number of local shops that feature locally made products.  These include Country Lane Crafts, Uniquely Yours, Home Towne Candles, and Frame and Fortunes.
