Are the heirs or successors required to claim the body of the deceased and arrange the funeral?

Yes. The heirs or successors are required to act; the expenses are borne by the succession. However, the person who signs the contract with the funeral home may be held personally liable for payment if the succession does not have sufficient funds to pay. Funeral expenses may be partially reimbursed out of the death benefit paid by the Qubec Pension Plan (QPP), if the deceased was eligible for it. If the deceased was receiving social assistance, the Ministre de l’Emploi et de la Solidarit sociale may, in some cases, reimburse part of these expenses.
